Step 01
Choose the bike type first
Start with the bike you are actually planning to ride. Road and gravel bikes often use centimeter labels, while mountain and hybrid bikes commonly use S, M, L, and XL. Kids' bikes are usually sized by wheel diameter. A 54 cm road bike is only a starting point; it does not translate directly to a mountain bike size because frame design and labels differ.
Step 02
Measure your height and cycling inseam
Measure your height barefoot against a wall. For cycling inseam, stand with your feet slightly apart and press a book firmly between your legs as if you were sitting on a bike seat; measure from the top of the book to the floor. Record both measurements in centimeters and feet and inches. Your pants inseam is not always the same as your cycling inseam, so measure it directly before using a chart.
Step 03
Use height to find a starting range
Match your height to the chart for the correct bike type to narrow the choice to one or two sizes. Height is a useful first filter, not a final fit decision. Use inseam to check for enough standover clearance and to see whether the saddle can reach the right height without leaving you stretched or cramped.
Step 04
Check standover, reach, and riding position
When two sizes overlap, compare the actual frame. Standover clearance tells you whether you can stand over the frame comfortably, while reach tells you whether the handlebars feel too close or too far away. A higher front end lets you sit more upright. A smaller frame often feels easier to control; a larger frame may feel more relaxed only when standover and reach remain comfortable.
Step 05
Verify the exact brand and model
Finish with the manufacturer's current size chart and frame details for the exact model year. Trek, Giant, Specialized, and other brands use different labels and size ranges. Compare the published height range, inseam or clearance guidance, and handlebar reach. If you are between sizes or buying an expensive bike, a test ride or professional bike fit is the safest final check.
