Road fit rules
Road sizing starts with height, but the final call is standover and reach.
Common road frames map XS-XL to roughly 47-62cm.
A 54cm can fit like a medium, but geometry differs by model.
Endurance road bikes usually have more stack than race bikes.
If you are between sizes, compare standover before reach tweaks.

Between sizes
Pick the size that matches your fit goal after clearance checks.
Choose the smaller size when
You want a lower, sportier fit, have shorter inseam, or need more standover clearance.
Choose the larger size when
You prefer a steadier endurance position and the standover and reach both check out.
Do not decide by height alone
Road frames can share a height range but differ in stack, reach, and effective top tube.
Road bike FAQ
Short answers for choosing a road frame before purchase.
What road bike size do I need for my height?
Use height for the first range, then check inseam and standover. Most adult road sizes overlap, so riders near the edge of a range should compare both adjacent sizes.
Is a 54cm road bike the same as a medium?
Often, but not always. Trek may label the same range as M / 54, Giant may use M, and Specialized may show 54cm. Geometry still varies by model.
Should I size up or down on a road bike?
If both sizes fit your height, size down for a racier setup or when standover is tight. Size up only when reach remains comfortable and you want a calmer endurance fit.
