Women's bike sizing

Height and inseam pick the size

Bike Size for Women: Frame Shape, Not a Second Scale

A women's bike does not use a second sizing scale. It uses the same height and inseam ladder as every other bike, with a frame shape that changes the top tube, the standover, and the reach. On the 2024 Verve 3 Lowstep, the step-through frame lists 87 mm less standover than the step-over frame at the same size, and 2 mm less reach.

The short answer

Start with height, then check inseam. Read both against the chart for the kind of bike you want, exactly as you would for any frame. Choose a women's frame when you want the lower top tube and the shorter reach, then confirm standover and reach on the exact model and model year. The women's label changes the frame, not the size you ride.

  • The chart lists 3 sizes that name a women's frame, all hybrid bikes.
  • They cover 152–183 cm of rider height and 71–86 cm of inseam.
  • A 2024 Verve 3 Lowstep at size M sits 87 mm lower than the Verve 3 Step-Over at the same size.

01

What the women's label changes

A women's frame is a frame built for a shorter torso relative to leg length, on average. The brand changes the shape: a lower top tube, a shorter reach, a narrower handlebar, and sometimes a shorter crank and a different saddle. The size label stays on the same ladder as the rest of the range.

A separate women's size chart would duplicate that ladder, so brands size a women's frame by rider height and inseam. Liv is Giant's women's line and Juliana is Santa Cruz's, and both use the same centimeter labels as the parent brand.

The shape change shows up in the numbers. A step-through frame removes the top tube between the seat tube and the head tube, so the rider can stand over the frame without lifting a leg over it. The bars stay in the same place.

What a women's frame usually changes

  • Top tube shape, which sets standover height.
  • Reach, through a shorter top tube and stem.
  • Handlebar width and crank length on some models.
  • Saddle shape, which is often the only difference on a unisex frame.

Treat the label as a frame shape, not a size.

02

What the label does not change

The height ladder does not move. A rider at 168 cm reads the same band whether the frame is labeled women's or unisex. What changes is which frame in that band feels right: the lower top tube when standover is tight, and the shorter reach when the bars feel far away.

This matters for the checkout. A shop may list a women's bike under a different size name, such as a step-through or a lowstep, without a women's label at all. Read the published height and inseam range on the product page, then compare it with the chart rather than with another brand's label.

Read the published height range on the product page first.

03

The 3 women's sizes in the chart

The chart lists 3 sizes whose label names a women's frame, all hybrid bikes from Avasta: 26" Step-Through at 152–173 cm, 700C / 15" Step-Through at 155–170 cm, and 700C / 17" Step-Through at 168–183 cm.

Read the ranges as a group. They cover 152–183 cm of height in total, which is most of the adult range. The inseam ranges run from 71 cm to 86 cm.

The 26" Step-Through and the 700C / 15" Step-Through sizes overlap in the middle of the range, so a rider in that band has two published options from one brand. Standover separates them first, then reach.

04

How the sizes land on the hybrid ladder

The hybrid ladder runs from XS at 148–158 cm to XXL at 193–198 cm. Each women's size falls inside one or more of those bands. the 26" Step-Through size overlaps XS, S, M. the 700C / 15" Step-Through size overlaps XS, S, M. the 700C / 17" Step-Through size overlaps S, M, L.

That mapping answers the common question. The 155–170 cm overlap sits inside the hybrid S band, and two of the women's sizes cover a rider in it. Above 173 cm the first size stops, and only the 700C / 17" Step-Through size still covers the rider. The women's sizes do not form a second ladder. They sample the same ladder at three points.

When a size lands across two ladder bands, use the inseam to break the tie. A rider with a short inseam for her height reads toward the lower band, because the standover has less room to spare.

Standover: the measured shape change

The clearest number comes from one model year with two frame shapes. The 2024 Verve 3 Lowstep and the Verve 3 Step-Over are the same bike at the same size M. The lowstep frame lists 682 mm of standover. The step-over frame lists 769 mm. The difference is 87 mm.

Reach barely moves between the two frames. The lowstep lists 385 mm of reach and the step-over lists 387 mm, a difference of 2 mm. The frame shape removes height at the top tube without shortening the cockpit.

The two figures explain the frame shape. If you need clearance to stand over the bike at a stop, the step-through frame gives you 87 mm more room for the same fit at the bars. If you need a shorter reach, the frame shape alone may not deliver it, and you should compare the reach column across models.

06

Reach: the number that picks the size

Reach is the horizontal distance from the bottom bracket to the top of the head tube. It sets how far you lean, and it is the number that decides between two sizes when both cover your height. At size M, 5 hybrid frames in the chart list reach figures from 382 mm to 410 mm. The spread is 28 mm on the same label.

A women's frame with a shorter reach puts the bars closer without moving the saddle. That suits a rider who feels stretched on a unisex frame at the same height. A rider who feels cramped needs more reach, and a women's frame at the same label may move the bars the wrong way.

Take one reach number from a bike you already ride, or from a fit session, and compare it with the published figure for the model you want. Frame reach does not include the stem, so a stem change can adjust the final position by 10 to 20 mm.

07

When two sizes fit your height

The 26" Step-Through and the 700C / 15" Step-Through both cover 155–170 cm. A rider in that band has two published sizes, and the labels alone do not separate them.

Start with standover. If your inseam leaves less than 2 cm above a frame's standover, drop to the other size or to the smaller frame. Then check reach. A shorter reach suits a rider who wants an upright position, and a longer reach suits a rider who wants weight over the front wheel.

If both frames still fit, choose the one whose saddle height you can reach with the seatpost inside its range. A frame that forces the saddle to the top of the post leaves no room for a different saddle or a lower position later.

Use standover to drop a size, and reach to confirm it.

08

Brands that publish women's frames

Liv builds Giant's women's range, and Juliana builds Santa Cruz's. Both publish their own geometry tables, and both use the same centimeter or letter labels as the parent brand. Specialized publishes women's models inside its main range, and Trek uses frame shape names such as lowstep and step-through.

The brand pages in our directory show which models each brand publishes with a women's frame, and the size chart for each brand lists the height range behind every label. Use those pages when you have chosen a brand and need the numbers for one model year.

  • Liv for Giant's women's road, gravel, and hybrid models.
  • Juliana for Santa Cruz's women's mountain models.
  • Step-through and lowstep labels on unisex frames.

Confirm the model year before you compare a brand's figures.

Questions

Women's bike sizing FAQ

Do women's bikes have a different size chart?

No. A women's bike uses the same height and inseam ladder as the rest of the range. The frame shape changes the top tube, the standover, and sometimes the reach. Read the published height range for the model, then compare reach and standover with the frame you ride now.

What size bike for a woman 5 foot 6?

At 168 cm, the hybrid ladder puts you at the top of S and the bottom of M. 3 of the 3 women's sizes in our chart cover that height. Choose by standover and reach: the smaller frame for more clearance, the larger frame for a longer cockpit.

Is a women's bike frame smaller than a men's frame?

Not as a rule. At the same label, a women's frame usually has a shorter reach and a lower standover, and the seat tube may be shorter. The height range stays close to the unisex frame. Compare the published reach and standover for the exact model year rather than assuming a size down.

What is the difference between a step-through and a step-over frame?

A step-through frame removes the top tube between the seat tube and the head tube, so you can mount without lifting a leg over the bike. On the 2024 Verve 3 Lowstep, the lowstep frame lists 682 mm of standover and the step-over frame lists 769 mm, both at size M. Reach differs by 2 mm.

How much standover clearance should I leave?

Leave 2 to 3 cm above your inseam on a road or hybrid bike, 3 to 5 cm on gravel, and 5 to 10 cm on a mountain bike. Measure standover at the midpoint of the top tube with the tires at riding pressure. A step-through frame removes the top tube, so the clearance question changes shape rather than disappearing.

Should I size down on a women's bike?

Only if the reach is too long or the standover is too high. Size follows height and inseam, and the frame shape follows preference. A rider between two sizes picks the smaller frame for more clearance and a shorter reach, whichever label the frame carries.

Are women's bikes good for long rides?

The frame shape suits a shorter torso and a longer leg, which many riders find comfortable over distance. The fit still comes from saddle height, reach, and bar height. A women's frame that matches your reach and standover will ride better than a unisex frame that does not.

Where do I find the women's size for a brand?

Open the brand page in our directory and read the height range behind each label, then check the model page for reach and standover. Liv and Juliana publish separate women's geometry tables, and Specialized and Trek publish women's or step-through models inside their main ranges.
