US bicycle and e-bike cover

Bike insurance

Bicycle insurance: cover, cost, and e-bikes

A standalone policy covers theft, crash damage, and loss in transit. Sundays reports that homeowners and renters policies usually cap sporting equipment at a low value, so check that limit before you count on it.

What this page is

Bike Size Charts publishes frame size charts. We do not sell insurance policies and we cannot bind coverage. Every coverage and cost fact below names the insurer page it came from and the day we checked it.

How we choose providers

We list a provider when it publishes its coverage terms on its own site, sells policies in the US, and insures bicycles or e-bikes. We read the coverage page and the cost page, and we print each starting price with the page it came from.

What bicycle insurance costs

These are the starting premiums the providers publish, not quotes. The bike's value, your location, the deductible, and the options you add set the rest.

  • Sundays Insurance

Policies start at $8 a month. The bike's value and the options you add set the rest.

  • Velosurance

Policies start at $100 a year. Frame material, insured value, deductible, location, how you ride, and the cover you select set the rest.

  • BikeInsure

Annual policies start near $16 a month for accidental damage and $20 a month with theft cover, each with a $150 deductible.

Compare cover, cost, and source

Each card shows the cover a provider publishes, the starting price, and the page behind both. Compare the same line across providers. The table below compares the terms that decide a claim.

Does bicycle insurance cover an e-bike?

Yes, when the bike is a class 1, 2, or 3 electric bicycle. Check the class first. A throttle bike is class 2, and a bike that assists to 28 mph is class 3.

  • Velosurance covers class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes with a top assisted speed of 28 mph.
  • BikeInsure sells a separate e-bike coverage type for class 1 to 3 bikes.
  • Sundays covers an electric pedal-assist bike that meets state and federal law.

The e-bike classes

Class 1
Pedal assist only, with motor help up to 20 mph.
Class 2
A throttle plus pedal assist, with motor help up to 20 mph.
Class 3
Pedal assist with motor help up to 28 mph.

Is a standalone policy worth it?

Start with the limit on your homeowners policy. Sundays reports that it may cap sporting equipment at a stated amount, for example $800 even for an $8,000 bike, and that these policies rarely cover a crash or a theft away from home.

A standalone policy pays for the loss. BikeInsure says a claim does not affect your other personal policies. Compare its $150 deductible with the one on your homeowners policy.

Do state rules change the answer?

Yes. New Jersey is the clearest case. Every e-bike in the state must be registered. A pedal-assist bike that stops at 20 mph needs registration but no insurance. A bike with a throttle, or one that assists between 21 and 28 mph, counts as a motorized bicycle and must carry insurance from July 19, 2026. Ask a provider whether its policy meets that requirement before you count on it. BikeInsure says the states it sells in vary, and enrollment shows yours.

Bicycle insurance questions

Short answers to the questions riders ask before they quote.

How much does bicycle insurance cost?

Each provider publishes a starting premium. The cost section lists every provider with the page each figure came from. A quote for your own bike depends on its value, your location, the deductible, and the options you add.

Is bicycle insurance worth it?

Compare the price with the limit on your homeowners policy. Sundays reports that a homeowners policy may cap a bike at $800 even when the bike cost $8,000, and that these policies rarely cover a crash or a theft away from home. BikeInsure sets a $150 deductible per claim.

Does bicycle insurance cover theft?

Every provider on this page covers theft. Sundays and Velosurance include theft at home and away from home as standard. BikeInsure sells theft cover as an option, so add it at enrollment.

Does bicycle insurance cover an e-bike?

Velosurance covers class 1, 2, and 3 e-bikes up to 28 mph. BikeInsure has a separate e-bike coverage type for class 1 to 3. Sundays covers a pedal-assist e-bike that meets state and federal law, so check your class before you quote.

What is an exclusion?

An exclusion is a loss the policy does not pay for. Racing is the term to check first. Sundays and Velosurance cover a crash in a race only when you add racing cover, and BikeInsure enrolls race use under its own coverage type.

Check the frame size before you decide

A replacement bike needs the same size check as the first one. These pages read the published tables for each brand, and the calculator returns a starting size from height and inseam.
